Prophets in the Church

Homily originally given September 3, 2023 Readings: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/083026.cfm Vatican II insists that prophecy in life and word is part of our vocation in the Church. Prophecy is exciting work: through the Holy Spirit, Christ is acting in us to integrate all creation into his love for the Father. Our lives – from the simplest chores to the most public works – are destined for eternal meaning: God wants them to witness to his own eternal love. What does it take to be a true prophet? Jesus tells us that the prophet, like every Christian, must speak from his own conversion and trust in God’s plan. Otherwise, he will become a false prophet speaking in his own name – thinking as men do, and not as God. There are false prophets who do not speak the word of the Lord, but rather use parts of the word of the Lord to serve or justify themselves. True prophets are ready to be uncomfortable, to embrace the cross in union with Jesus for the salvation of the world. Enjoy the homily!
