Job and the Confusion of Guilt and Suffering

This is the third in a series of three talks on miscarriage, still birth and early infant loss, or any couple who tragically lost their child prematurely. These are spiritual reflections. Couples in such a situation often have very practical questions as well. For that reason, I offer below some additional resources. https://www.catholicmiscarriagesupport.com/ https://mycatholicdoctor.com/catholic-miscarriage-and-infant-loss-support/ https://www.elizabethministry.org/ "Grieving Together: A Couple’s Journey Through Miscarriage" by Laura and Franco Fanucci (2018). This book was written by a couple specifically for couples. It draws from Catholic tradition and teaching. Finally, as a Cistercian I am happy to share this quotation attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux and addressed to a couple who lost their child before baptism. However, I must add the caveat that I have not yet tracked down the original source (so, it might be apocryphal): “Your faith spoke for this child. Baptism for this child was only delayed by time. Your faith suffices. The waters of your womb – were they not the waters of life for this child? Look at your tears. Are they not like the waters of baptism? Do not fear this. God’s ability to love is greater than our fears. Surrender everything to God.”
