The Anointing of the Sick (Catechism Series Part 26) Auspice Maria Ep 56

Auspice Maria with Bishop James Ruggieri

Bishop James Ruggieri turns to the second sacrament of healing: the anointing of the sick. He traces Jesus's tenderness toward the suffering throughout the Gospels, from the healing of Simon Peter's mother-in-law to Christ's compassion at the tomb of Lazarus. Drawing on paragraphs 1499 to 1532 of the Catechism, Bishop Ruggieri explains how illness fits within the Paschal Mystery and how suffering, when united to Christ, can carry real meaning rather than despair. He also addresses common misunderstandings about the sacrament. Anointing is not reserved for the dying. It brings strengthening, peace, and courage to anyone facing serious illness, old age, or a difficult surgery, and it can be received more than once. "The sick are not simply people to whom the Church ministers, they are also members through whom the Church is sanctified."
