Born a pagan and raised with a good education, Pachomius became a Christian after serving in the Roman army. Going into the desert he found a hermit to guide his faith and eventually formed his own community of monks. His community was so successful that he formed many others and became known as the father of communal monasticism. Saint Pachomius the Great 292 - 346. Feast day: May 9.
