Came for Hoops, Stayed for Heaven | Cliff Riley, Esq. | Episode #370
The BeatiDudes
Cliff Riley went to the University of Dallas to play Division 3 basketball, and almost as soon as he arrived, he started applying to transfer out. Ninety pages of reading a day and a campus full of rules seemed like a steep price for a jump shot, and he came very close to heading home to UCLA. Then the Great Books got under his skin, and so did a group of guys who were real athletes, totally normal, and dead serious about their faith. The school he tried to escape is where his faith eventually started. Cliff Riley is back at the Tiny Table with Paul Kolker, Nick Bezner, and Jeff Schiefelbein of The BeatiDudes, this time to tell his own faith story. His dad studied for the priesthood, left seminary, and spent years away from the Church before finding his way back. Cliff explains why a classical education teaches you that the hardest questions are ancient ones, and why no political program or two-hour HR seminar will ever erase the line between good and evil that, as Solzhenitsyn put it, runs through every human heart. Plus: why spring Romers claim to be holier, why an entire Catholic university goes all in on Groundhog Day, and exactly how many credit hours Jeff is from finishing his MBA.
