Ottoboni received an education at the University of Padua and earned a doctorate in canon and civil law in 1627. Pope Innocent X appointed him to the cardinalate and in 1652 made Cardinal-Priest of San Salvatore in Lauro. Pope Innocent XI died and a conclave ensued and they elected Ottoboni on October 6, 1689 and he chose the name Alexander VIII. While he celebrated a canonization Mass on October 16, 1690, he looked sluggish and fell ill. Doctors suggested that the pope rest. Eventually, Alexander VIII died on February 1, 1691.
