A Snake Shatters the Anti-Statue Argument

The Steward’s Key

In this episode of The Catholic Steelman, we take on one of the most common Protestant objections to Catholicism: “Catholics worship statues.” But if sacred images are inherently sinful, then why does God command the bronze serpent in Numbers 21? And why does Jesus Himself in John 3:14 use that same image as a type of His own saving work on the Cross? This episode explores the difference between idolatry and sacred imagery, why Exodus 20 does not condemn all religious images, and how the bronze serpent completely changes the conversation. We also look at why the serpent was later destroyed, what that actually proves, and why this issue is really about the heart, not the mere existence of an image. If you’ve ever heard the claim that Catholic statues violate the Bible, this episode will help put that argument on much more serious theological ground. Topics covered: * Numbers 21 and the bronze serpent * Exodus 20 and graven images * John 3:14 and biblical typology * Veneration vs worship * Why sacred images are not automatically idolatry Subscribe, share, and follow The Catholic Steelman for more episodes on Scripture, typology, and Catholic apologetics.
