St. Mary MacKillop

Walking With the Saints

Early Life and Calling Saint Mary MacKillop was born on January 15, 1842, in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Australia, to Scottish immigrants. From a young age, Mary displayed a deep sense of faith and a strong desire to help those in need. Her early experiences caring for her siblings and working as a governess and teacher instilled in her a passion for education and social justice. Founding the Sisters of St. Joseph In 1866, at the age of 24, Mary MacKillop co-founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart with Father Julian Tenison Woods. Their mission was to provide free education to the poor, particularly in rural areas where access to schooling was limited. The order focused on establishing schools, orphanages, and shelters for those in need, driven by a commitment to social justice and the dignity of every person. Challenges and Perseverance Mary MacKillop faced significant challenges throughout her life, including opposition from some church authorities and misunderstandings about her work and methods. Despite these difficulties, she remained steadfast in her mission. In 1871, she was even excommunicated by the local bishop due to disputes over the governance of her order. This excommunication was lifted within a year, and Mary was eventually vindicated. Expansion and Impact Under Mary’s leadership, the Sisters of St. Joseph rapidly expanded their work across Australia and New Zealand. The order’s dedication to providing education, care for the poor, and support for rural communities left a lasting impact on countless lives. Mary's emphasis on compassion, humility, and resilience became hallmarks of the order’s work. Death and Canonization Saint Mary MacKillop passed away on August 8, 1909, in Sydney, Australia. Her legacy of faith, education, and social justice continued to grow, and she became a symbol of hope and perseverance. Mary was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 17, 2010, becoming Australia’s first saint. Her life and work are celebrated for their profound contributions to society and the Church. Feast Day and Legacy Saint Mary MacKillop’s feast day is celebrated on August 8th. She is remembered as a patron of Australia and those who work in education and social services. Her life continues to inspire those dedicated to helping the poor and providing education to the underserved.
